The fast-and-light campfire
Big flames. Tiny frame.
The HOWL R1 puts 32-inch flames into a rugged, shoebox-sized package built for mild-season camps and tightly packed rigs. Fold in the legs, tuck it into a drawer, cubby, cargo box, or truck bed, and carry real campfire atmosphere wherever the road leads.
Firelight for days, packed like a shoebox
The R1 is designed to turn propane into visible, usable firelight instead of hiding the flame inside a deep box or bowl. Its A-Flame burner and FlexDome windscreen work together to create tall, adjustable flames with impressive fuel efficiency. There is no firewood to haul and no smoke, flying embers, sparks, or ash to clean up afterward.
A-Flame Technology
A precision burner with 160 micro-emitters creates a bright, clean, weather-resistant flame that reaches approximately 32 inches in calm air.
FlexDome Windscreen
The heat-responsive windscreen protects the flame without hiding it, building flame height while keeping every inch of firelight in view.
Gullwing Folding Legs
Flip the legs out for a steady stance at camp, then fold them into the press-brake frame for tight storage and easy transportation.
Firelight to tell stories by. Efficiency for days. Small enough to live permanently in your rig.

Questions & answers
HOWL R1 FAQ
Everything you need to know about packing, operating, and living with the world’s most portable campfire.
Portable & ready for weather
What does it do in strong wind?
The A-Flame windscreen protects the base of the flame from gusts without hiding the fire inside a box. As with any open flame, performance depends on wind speed and direction; position the R1 safely and follow the operating instructions.
How small is it when packed?
With its Gullwing legs folded, the R1 measures just 13.275 × 8.43 × 6.05 inches—roughly the size of a shoebox. It fits easily into truck drawers, RV cubbies, van garages, rooftop cargo carriers, and other tight storage spaces.
Does it have folding legs?
Yes. The R1’s Gullwing legs flip out for a steady stance at camp, then fold into the frame for compact packing.
What if it rains or snows?
The A-Flame burner plate is precision-shaped to shed water quickly. Brush away accumulated rain, snow, or debris before lighting, and always follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions.
Big flames, efficient fuel
How do exposed flames make the tank last longer?
Deep fire-pit walls force you to burn extra fuel just to make the flame visible above the enclosure. The R1 keeps its flames exposed, so the fuel you burn becomes light you can actually see and use.
How long will a 20-pound propane tank last?
Approximately eight hours at full blast. Turn the infinitely adjustable regulator down and the same tank can last considerably longer.
Is the flame adjustable?
Yes. The included pressure regulator is infinitely adjustable, allowing you to dial the flame height and fuel consumption to suit the night.
How does it make taller flames with less fuel?
The A-Flame burner uses 160 precision micro-emitters to produce many small flames that combine into one tall, lively flame. The FlexDome windscreen then helps build flame height without requiring extra fuel.
Built & supported
What is the R1 made from?
This thing is metal. The R1 is built from 304 stainless steel, aircraft-grade aluminum, and brass.
What if I manage to break it?
Scratches and dents are marks of a good time. If something breaks and affects the R1’s functionality, HOWL can inspect the unit and repair or replace the affected components at a reasonable cost.
Is it really made in the USA?
Yes. Design, fabrication, cutting, press-braking, assembly, testing, and packaging are completed in Colorado.
Is there a warranty?
Yes. Damage caused by normal wear, use, or accidents may be repairable at a reasonable cost. If HOWL determines that damage resulted from a manufacturing defect, it may repair or replace the affected item at no cost, at its discretion. Refer to the manufacturer’s current warranty terms for complete coverage and eligibility details.
